Biography

Gildas Berthelot, France (1961)

Gildas Berthelot was born in France in 1961. He graduated in visual arts from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the University of Quebec, Montreal. He learned the trade of cabinetmaker at a very young age in the workshop of his father, himself a cabinetmaker, who passed on his passion and knowledge to him.

Both a cabinetmaker and visual artist, Gildas Berthelot has forged a particular path in contemporary design since the 1990s. From his vision and his experience are born furniture sculptures which are also imaginary creatures, developed thanks to his mastery of hand techniques.

Gildas Berthelot draws, designs and creates each piece himself in his workshop in Canada. His dual training as an artist and cabinetmaker allows him to reconcile artistic creativity and technical prowess. The creative idea is gradually refined from the second to the third dimension, from the drawing to the model.
