Large mahogany and ash buffet-bar, by Joseph-André Motte, Editions Groupe 4 Charron
France, circa 1955

History

Groupe 4, born in 1953, was the association of four young designers: Alain Richard, Joseph-André Motte, Geneviève Dangles and René-Jean Caillette, whose promotion and publishing were then handled by Georges Charron.

With the advice of Louis Brulliard, editor-in-chief of Meubles et Décors, Georges Charron founded, in fact, with the advice of Louis Brulliard, editor-in-chief of Meubles et Décors, this group of 4 young designers.
In 1953, a Groupe 4 store opened on rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in Paris, offering rational furniture for the modern home. Some of the furniture was innovative: hot-bent wood for a series designed by Joseph-André Motte from 1954, adjustable mirrors with indirect lighting for René-Jean Caillette’s dressing table. In the following decade, until its closure in 1972, Charron’s furniture became more luxurious, aimed at a wealthy clientele.
