Pair of wall sconces or ceiling lights, by Jean-Boris Lacroix, Editions Jacques Biny-Luminalite
Paris, France, 1959

History

After a distinguished and well-recognized career, Jacques Biny founded the company Luminalite in 1953 on Rue de la Folie Régnault in Paris. This functional workshop had enough space to handle numerous public commissions and participate in national trade shows.

Jacques Biny devoted himself to the design and production of contemporary lighting fixtures for specific purposes: bedside sconces, porthole lights, ceiling lights, pendant lights, wall sconces, table lamps, desk lamps, floor lamps… This body of work comprises a collection of nearly 400 fixtures listed exclusively in Luminalite catalogs, not including custom models created on request.

His designs are distinguished by their dual effect of diffusion and refraction, as well as the innovative nature of the materials used—metal (lacquered, perforated, curved, etc.) and Perspex.

Luminalite remained under Jacques Biny’s control until his death in 1976. The Cheret company, having acquired the business, partially continued operations and fulfilled a few orders in the Luminalite tradition from approximately 1977 to 1982.
