Biography

Motoko Ishii, born in Tokyo in 1938, is a Japanese lighting designer.

After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1962, she worked for lighting design firms in Finland and Germany from 1965 to 1967.

After returning, Motoko Ishii founded her own agency in 1968. She was responsible for lighting design for the 1975 Osaka World Expo and the 1975 International Ocean Expo.

She was responsible for lighting design for the 1985 Tsukuba International Exhibition and Japan Flora 2000. With the lighting of Tokyo Tower in 1989, she attracted attention in Japan and internationally. She won the IES Illumination awards for the Horticultural Exhibition of 1990 and for the Rainbow Bridge in 1994. In 2018, she created the lighting of the Eiffel Tower.
