France, 1975
Biography
Juan Palau, Spain-France (1929-2013)
Juan Palau left behind him a considerable body of work, he created a number of monuments in the town of Moulins and the surrounding towns as well as sculptures of a more modest size.
For decades, he developed an original style with refined shapes recognizable among a thousand, whether his works are abstract or figurative. Pure curves revealing the multiple facets of characters with a minimal look, astonishing empty spaces of presence, abstract forms defying gravity.
His favorite material was cement, for the most imposing sculptures he used relatively sophisticated steel frames.
But Juan Palau had other strings to his bow, clay and plaster for more classic works, notably realistic portraits, and he also had a talent for stonemason and notably produced magnificent slate bas-reliefs evolving since from organic forms at the start of his career to much more conceptual and stylized figures over the years.
